Program Notes
In Progress for horn alone is inspired by the process of personal growth. Every single one of us has our own unique struggles. We are each shaped by the people we interact with and our individual experiences. Many of us may have had traumatic experiences that made us feel as though we lost our sense of self. The healing process helps us to recognize that our sense of self is an ever-changing thing. Personal growth is a lifelong process, and it is never too late to look inwards.
This piece outlines a journey of personal growth. The first section of this work features a playful motive signifying this base sense of self. The second section emerges from a moment of silence with a sudden drop in register, addition of sporadic rhythms, and loss of the motive established in the beginning. These style changes indicate the abandonment of this base sense of self in order to survive a low point of confusion and hurt. The third section begins with a transition out of this low point, which features muted horn in a more limited range. The range begins to extend and remnants of the pre-established motive return, leading the piece back to a new edition of the original motive. More virtuosic runs and livelier tempo indicate a reconnection to this evolved sense of self. The piece ends with an unraveling of the motive and no real resolution, signifying that personal growth is a lifelong process.
